Fantastic Reissue of "Life" Biography!

This comes in a soft cover or hard cover, and I opted for the soft cover to get the feel of the original. This is an amazing "magazine". I should call it a book, because it is so packed full of information and pictures that I had not seen before. I really didn't expect that, but I couldn't put it down until I had gone all the way through it, and I plan to go through it again this weekend. Of course, it isn't as full of information as some of the books I have that are 200-400 pages long, but I really love what is included. I've been to several of Sir Paul's concerts, and tend to collect more of his memorabilia and works, but I think that this will end up being one of my favorite books about John. Very nice!

Even though this book was second hand ex-NY public library the first 18 fell out. I still found the book very informative with plenty of pictures of John covering all of his life both in colour and black & white all. I have bought many items from Amazon over the years and have found the delivery & handing charges of £16.45 well above the average cost for the same sort of item.

Spectacular watercolor paintings by Kuni Fukai marry the art nouveau artifice of artists like Aubrey Beardsley to ’60s psychedelia; the film’s North American distributor, Cinelicious Pics, describes it as “equal parts J.R.R. Tolkien and gorgeous, explicit Gustav Klimt-influenced eroticism.” A legendary cult classic, Belladonna of Sadness has never been officially released in the United States―until now. This publication accompanies the restored film’s North American release.
Beautifully produced in a colorful, large-format edition, this volume provides an indispensable companion to this incredible animated masterpiece, including script outtakes, stills and other ephemera from the film, a text about the film’s painstaking restoration and interviews conducted with the film’s illustrator, composer, and director Eiichi Yamamoto.
The first printing of the book will include a Blu-ray disc of the 4k restored version of the feature film, with bonus features including interviews with the director, composer and illustrator of the film, original trailer and more. Once the first printing of the book is sold out, the Blu-ray will not be included with any future printings.

Disappointing

Beautifully bound and printed, but disappointing content-wise. A majority of this book is the entirety of the movie in screenshot form with select snippets of dialogue scattered about. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, they've been producing artbooks in this vein forever (not to mention "movie manga" titles from Japan), the problem lies with publisher Hat & Beard's advertisement of the volume:

"This publication accompanies the restored film’s North American release. Beautifully produced in a colorful, large-format edition, this volume provides an indispensable companion to this incredible animated masterpiece, including script outtakes, stills and other ephemera from the film, a text about the film’s painstaking restoration and interviews conducted with the film’s illustrator, composer, and director Eiichi Yamamoto."

H&B makes no mention that the book consists mostly of stills and to make matters worse, there are no script outtakes and the so-called "production ephemera" is a scan of the script's front page. That's it. Overall what we have here is the equivalent of a Criterion Collection extras booklet but oversized and hardbound. I find it a missed opportunity on Cinelicious' part to opt for a separate book like this, instead of releasing at least the written extras with their already lacking in presentation release of the film itself. It came with a small pamphlet with a review. Those interviews and restoration information would have been amazing served-up alongside the movie as typical with boutique film label releases.

Don't get me wrong, this book is gorgeous and having stills of it directly at my fingertips is very cool. But straight-up being deceptive about what's contained in it? Really, really disappointing.

Belladonna of Sadness is a long lost masterpiece. I firstly watched it many years ago and it created a great impression which I still remember until now. That's why I didn't have any problem to buy this book. I wanted it to be part of my collection.
About the book, even though, it's a good print, I think people would find there's not enough content for $42. But for me, I will buy it anyway. Please consider about it yourself before buying it.

I enjoyed the interviews with the creators

High quality paper and images and a gorgeous layout peppered with lines from the script. I enjoyed the interviews with the creators, but it's true that the bulk of the book is "eye candy". That said, I purchased it to study and gape at the film's artwork, so I am pleased with the purchase. My only complaint is that two spreads have pictures where the focal point is lost in the gutter (crease), but the rest of the book is so lovely that I'm keeping the rating at five stars.

A Landmark Drama

Written in the late 1970s and debuting on Broadway in 1980, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD began as Mark Medoff's response to actress Phyllis Frelich's comment that few plays portrayed deaf and hearing-impaired people in a realistic manner. The resulting play shattered stereotypes and, in a very real sense, changed the way that society in general regarded people with hearing disabilities.

The story centers on the relationship between hearing James Leeds and deaf Sarah Norman, the former a teacher, the later a defiant woman who declines to communicate in any way other than sign language. Initial hostility turns into an affair; the affair turns into a marriage--but in the wake of the marriage the couple is repeatedly torn between the deaf and hearing worlds and Sarah's sudden determination that no one shall speak for her but herself.

CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, which won an arm-load of Tony Awards, was among the very few non-musical plays that toured extensively in the 1980s. I myself had the opportunity to see one such tour and was startled when a group seated near me walked out on the show. "I thought this was going to be a play about those dear little deaf children!" a woman in the group loudly complained. No, it isn't, and after seeing or reading it you will find it difficult to think about people with hearing disabilities--or any other disability for that matter--in quite the same way. It is powerful stuff.

Many non-theatre people find playscripts difficult to read, and in truth playscripts are a blueprint for directors and actors and not intended as reading material for the general public. This is preface to the very basic statement that some plays "read" well and some do not. I must note that many readers may find it difficult to imagine how it is staged and how the sign language and various translation modes work on stage. It will be a bit of a challenge to some, but even so I strongly recommend it.

Review of The Tao of Watercolor by Jeanne Carbonetti

If you started painting with watercolor because you love the color and flow of the paint, this is an excellent book. I found this book extremely helpful in learning watercolor techniques that focus on the flow of the watercolor itself and not drawing. Jeanne Carbonetti helps the painter understand how to let the watercolor itself dictate what the painting is to become by allowing colors to do what they will while still maintaining control of the medium. Reality is added only near the end. This book gave me a great start but actually working with the artist solidified my understanding of the techniques and my own style of painting with watercolor. Carbonetti's style really allows watercolors to sing and have depth.

Unique approach to painting, but lacks teaching steps

The style of the book is unique. The author's approach to painting is an all encompassing experience, which includes the body, spirit and external stimulation. I'm not that familiar with "Tha" painting, but I find several approaches interesting. Plus, I liked that the artist/author used bold colors and gave examples of their works created with them. However, my one complaint is that more steps should have been included of how to complete a painting using those bold colors. Many steps were absent throughout all the book's examples, which is usually what makes a book only good or okay, instead of great. I realize many artists tell you to finish a painting the way you want, and this is okay, but in a teaching book, I expect to see lots of steps on how the artist begins and completes at least one work of art. Similar to a math equation; once you learn steps and see how they all work together, you can solve an equation usually in many ways. Overall, I do like the book and this is primarily because its unusual and unique from all the other technique books I have. I would consider this my "yoga" watercolor book on a beginners level.

The techniques are great

I tried and enjoyed many of the author/artist's techniques and found them pleasing. It IS important to use good wc paper and good paints. Usually I try a new technique using the insipid paints and crappy paper I bought before I knew better (Hey, I feel like I have to use it for SOMETHING.) just to get a feel for it before I switch to the good stuff. In this case, the techniques are easy enough and honestly they don't work with inferior supplies.

As to all the philosophy, I could have done without it. A little is fine, but I buy art books for art; I have plenty of philosophy books of my own that suit me better.

About the Author
A sea captain by trade, Bill Rook has been hot rodding Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 1972.  Along the way, he's picked up an incomparable base of knowledge from which to build the ultimate high-performance, yet streetable, V-twin engine.  He resides in Seward, Alaska.

Excellent Sportster Engine Book

This was one of the first books I bought when I started modifying my 2002 Sportster. Since then, I've gone on to read Buzzelli, Remus, Hamill and even the out of print books by Denish. Whle each of the books has their positive aspects, I consider Mr. Rook's books to one of the best for 99% of the home mechanics out there. His theory is solid, his explanations are understandable, and I frankly consider his writing style to be outstanding. While a chapter of the book covers magnetos, it is less out dated than a method he uses to explain ignition theory. I have read everything I could on Harley engines and I couldn't imagine finding such a wealth of information just surfing the internet. Since buying the book, I've bought 5 more just to give to friends with Harleys, just to show them what can be done with their engines. As Mr. Rook states in his book, achieving engine power is a series of comromises: a drag bike won't work well in the street and a street bike loses drag races. HIs book is similarly a middle ground between a boring manual and a glossy coffee table book, not boring and not superficial. Far from being outdated, the topics described such as fuel/air ratios, carb modification, and compression theory are both current and correct. As a result of reading his book, I have been able to speak to speed shop mechanics on their level and have successfully designed and built my own modified sportster engine. I have nothing but praise for this book and await his next effort.

Excellent book.

I've been riding and wrenching on HDs for over twenty years and I still found this book useful. It confirmed a lot of opinions I had on building a "street" motor and it gave me new information in other areas. I found that the chapters on camshafts, intake, and exhaust were some of the best I've read and expanded my knowledge of these areas.

If you are into HD motors, you should have this on your bookshelf.

Jeff kick started his career at just 17 in retail, and later setting up his own boutiques, designing surf wear and modeling. Let down....

This book is a bit of a let down. If the look you're going for is urban grunge, then I guess it's OK. The author insults our intelligence by letting us know that beige, white and black will work together. Really? Neutrals all work together? Thanks for sharing that wisdom! Also, for the record the word is 'cojones'... NOT 'kahunas'. Dressing to suit your personal taste and style takes 'cojones'. And are the loops on your pants not called belt loops? I have never heard of them referred to as boot loops... why would they be called boot loops? Look for a book called 'Dressing the Man'. That's a great book!
