Pinde Fu is a project lead and senior GIS application developer at Esri. His specialties include Web GIS technologies and applications in various industries. Several of his projects have won special achievement awards at Esri International User Conferences, and he received the Excellence.gov award from the American Council for Technology. He is the author of Getting to Know Web GIS: Principles and Applications, Esri Press, 2010. Fu has a PhD in GIS from the University of Kansas and an MS in GIS from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He chairs the Education Committee of CPGIS (International Association of Chinese Professionals in GIS), and he is a past president of CPGIS. I bought this book for self-study after completing a GIS ...

I bought this book for self-study after completing a GIS certificate program from a major university. I was looking forward to enhancing my GIS skills. By the second chapter, I realized that this book does not match up with the most current version of ArcGIS Online. I was able to muddle through, and figured out how to navigate through the newer version of ArcGIS Online on my own. By the third chapter, I discovered I couldn't go any further without access to ArcGIS for Server. Don't buy this book unless you are taking a class that uses this as a textbook.

A must have for any Geogeek

I was lucky enough to take a WebGIS Course at a major university that was taught by Dr. Pinde Fu (the author) and I learned so much. The book was able to provide a detailed background on each topic and then a lab to practice the skills.

You will learn how to create web maps on ArcGIS.com, web apps, publish data through ArcGIS Server, and even dive into adapting API's and writing Python scripts

I aint got time to bleed, but to read yes!!!!

This is an awesome e-book, hilarious and insightful. The cover art is amazing, the writing fast and furious. What's better than to remember the good old days of the fabulous 1980s reading about the greatest action movies of all time? Forget the current slew of kid friendly cgi heavy wussy films and go back to the times of spine-ripping adventure. Body oil and glistening pecks await.

I love Arnold, but I think this book could have been more well rounded in terms of the stars. There are five or six reviews of Arnold movies, but only one JCVD movie. But, on the whole, it was a funny and insightful book that covered all of the bases you’d want. The Over The Top review and a couple of others had me literally laughing out loud. Many of the classics were covered, but some were left out. Hopefully they appear in a future volume. There were also a lot of lesser known films that I’d now like to track down at some point. Everything is broken down into digestible parts that keep things flowing. For example, a couple of movies are covered, then there’s an essay about Cynthia Rothrock, then a couple more movies and a list of the best weapons ever used in 80s action movies, and so on. I was definitely entertained. I finished the whole thing in two sittings.

These are some of my favorite movies. Like the book says, they are really entertaining, fun and funny on their own terms. But then, they can also be campy and unintentionally hilarious. This book really captures that. Reading the book, you get a lot of nostalgia, re-experiencing some of these great movies and what made them great. But there’s also the broader perspective, that allows you to laugh at their ridiculous side. So, like the movies themselves, the book is a lot of fun.

Excellent high school text

Used this in our homeschool. Good explanations and diagrams. End-of-chapter questions are thought-provoking and lead to good discussions, most about current events. Makes your student think about 'the real world' of science not just as another academic requirement for graduation. My version is 10 years old but didn't find any glaring errors. (I was a biology major in college.)

When I was just eight years old, a few months after my father died, I was going through a box of his things when I found a wooden plaque engraved with these words:

Be ashamed to die until you have

won some victory for humanity.

—Horace Mann

At the time the plaque didn’t mean much to me—other than that it had belonged to my father—but it must have meant something because I never forgot its message. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about it a lot. Maybe because it’s now my reality. You could say that I’m fighting a battle for humanity. Of course I could die and not win any victory, but I think that’s got to be worth something too.

I once heard a story that really bothered me. I don’t know if it was true or not. I hope not. I don’t even want to share it with you, it’s that awful. But for the sake of my story I’m going to. It goes like this:

There was a man who was in charge of switching the railroad tracks for the train. It was an important job because if the train was on the wrong track, it could crash into another train, killing hundreds of people.

One evening, as he was about to switch the tracks for an oncoming train, he suddenly heard the cry of his young son, who had followed him out and was standing on the track he was supposed to switch the train to. This was the dilemma—if he switched the tracks, the train would kill his son. If he didn’t, the people on the train, hundreds of strangers he didn’t even know, might die.

At the last moment he switched the tracks. The people on the train went on by, not even knowing the disaster they had missed or the little boy who had been killed beneath them. The father went home carrying his son’s broken body.

I hate that story, but it makes me think. I’ve wondered if, given the same situation, I would change the tracks or not. It’s easy to act noble and say you would when you’re not there, but what if it’s someone you can’t live without? What if it were Taylor standing on the tracks? Or Ostin? Or my mom?

That takes me back to my father’s plaque about winning a victory for humanity. The war we’re fighting against Dr. Hatch and the Elgen is one the world doesn’t even know about. And just like the guy with the train, if we pull this off, no one on earth, not even you, will ever know how close they came to complete disaster or who was “killed beneath the train.” Like Wade. Or maybe, in the end, all of the Electroclan. If we don’t win, no one will even know that we tried. How’s that for a stupid dilemma? At least we’ll have no reason to die ashamed.

My name is Michael Vey. If you’re still following the insanity of my life, then you’ve been all around the world with me. From my home in Meridian, Idaho (which I doubt I’ll ever see again), we went to California, where we broke into the Elgen Academy and I was captured and put into Cell 25. (Yeah, I still have nightmares about that.) Then we broke out, attacked Dr. Hatch, and freed all his GPs, aka human guinea pigs.

You went with me to Peru, where we brought down the Elgen Starxource plant after Dr. Hatch tried to feed me to, like, a million rats. It’s also where we lost Wade.

We traveled west to the Port of Lima, where we sunk two of the Elgen’s boats—their main command ship, the Ampere, and their battleship, the Watt. Unfortunately, Dr. Hatch got off the Ampere just before it blew up.

Then we went to Taiwan, where we rescued a genius little girl named Jade Dragon before the Elgen could get what she knew out of her head—mainly how to get their MEI machine to make more of us—electric people. It was after our escape from the Taiwan Starxource plant that we found out that the Elgen had attacked Timepiece Ranch, our home base and the resistance’s headquarters in Mexico.

We flew back to the ranch—or at least what was left of it after the Elgen helicopters bombed it to ashes. We thought that everyone was dead, until we were found by Gervaso, who took us to the resistance’s new headquarters at Christmas Ranch near Zion National Park in southern Utah. Then Taylor, Gervaso, Ian, and I went back to Boise, where we rescued Taylor’s parents.

Still, in spite of all we’ve done, the Elgen just keep growing stronger. Now we have a plan to stop them once and for all. We’re going to the Elgen base in the South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, to steal the Joule—the Elgen’s floating piggy bank. As if that’s not crazy enough, that’s just one of our missions. Hatch has locked up three of his own electric kids for treason—his most powerful: Quentin, Tara, and Torstyn—and we’re going to try to free them. I can’t believe I’m even considering this. Along with Bryan, those are the same three who made fun of me just before Hatch tried to feed me to his rats in Peru.

This is the first time that all of us electrics (except Grace) will be going on a mission together. Even Tanner and Nichelle. Nichelle will be extremely valuable if Hatch’s electric kids decide not to cooperate. Still, this will be really dangerous for her. She betrayed Hatch the last time they met, and he’s not exactly the forgiving type. I’m guessing he’ll do anything to make her pay for what she did. Then again, I suppose that’s true for all of us.

I know, the whole plan seems crazy. If I had to lay odds on it, I’d say we’ve got a 10 percent chance of winning this one. I wouldn’t tell everyone else that. If I did, I’d have to drop that number to 1 percent, because if you think you’re going to fail, you most likely will—at least that’s what our gym teacher at Meridian High always said. But whether you think you’re going to lose or not, sometimes you do what you have to do because it’s the right thing, and let the chips fall where they may.

I think we’re about to drop a whole lot of chips.

I can't wait for book 7!

I preordered this book because I was flying abroad on the day that it reached the shelf in Kindle form. at the airports that I passed through I kept checking for the book to come in....
24 hours later - what a ride!
For some unknown reason I was under the impression that this was the last book in the series, all of which I have eagerly waited for. NOW Mr. Evans what have you done to me? November 2017? Ithink I will die of impatience!
Seriously, this is even better written than than the last one. PME keeps up the tension till it is bouncing off the computer screen. I collected the books and read 3,4, 5 one after the other knowing that after I finished 5 I would only have a month to wait for 6.
I am aware that these book are for young adults but 20 years ago when Paul Michael Evans was still on the shelf in our bookshops and I did not read electronic I became a fan of his books. I suspect that I am his only reader in Israel (my home). I used to order books (I have them all) and now read them on Kindle but that does not detract from my enjoyment and excitement when reading this very highly recommended continuation of one of the best adventure series available, for any age - I am nearly 70.

Bought s copy for myself and one for my son. He finished first and couldn't wait to talk to me about it. We are ordering the whole set as a gift for my nephew as he just turned 14 and needs to read this. Start with book one and read, read, read. Please don't stop with book 7.

Prepare Yourself

I love this series! I have been loyal to it from the beginning. I give it a 5 star because of that, and it was very well written, but to Richard Paul Evens, he really knows how to wrip someone's heart out and brake it into a million pieces. So I definitely recommend this book, but if you are as attached to this series as I am, prepare yourself for a rush of emotions.

Surprise attacks, raids and assassinations?

This book on "special operations" in the Age of chivalry is rather good and at times fascinating. Although the term used may appear anachronistic, it refers to surprise attacks, raids, abductions and assassinations, more generally grouped under the expression unconventional and covert warfare.

The book is divided into two parts. The first one is an analytical overview of special operations between 1100 and 1550, therefore covering part of the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. It aims to outline the main characteristics of "special operations" during the period and it also introduces some of the features of war in the age of chivalry. The second part is made up of six chapters, each of which presents one operation. The book is aimed at "non-professional readers" with little prior knowledge of warfare during the period under consideration. This explains why notes are listed at the end of each chapter (something that I, at least, found much handier than having them all at the back!) and why the discussion of sources is kept to a minimum.

I did, however, have some mild reservations. One is the author's comparison between "contemporary special forces" and those of the period he reviews. The contrast that is drawn between highly trained and specialized forces and largely non-professional soldiers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are interesting but feels at times at bit far-fetched. Apart from mercenaries, which even in the age of chivalry were more numerous than traditionally acknowledged, listing knights as non-professional soldiers may be a bit of an over-simplification. The parallel drawn between the targets during the two periods - in both cases capture of infrastructures (fortifications), destruction of infrastructures to deny them to the enemy, acts against people (murders or abductions) and against symbols also could be seen as somewhat superficial. Besides, a study of "special operations" during Antiquity would have also led to identify a very similar set of targets.

Some of the author's statements may be a bit sweeping, at times. For instance, Richard the Lion-Hart is presented as "winning the war" against the French King in 1199 when he got himself killed at Châlus. The reality seems to have been more complicated, with Richard exhausting himself in having to put down one rebellion after another across his huge domains in France, with each rebellion backed by Philippe Auguste. While Richard did manage to defeat his enemy several times, this war of attrition was certainly taking a heavy tool so that the assertion that he was winning would probably need to be toned down somewhat and is also debatable.

I was a bit surprised by the selection of episodes, partly because I expected them to be spread across the whole period and partly because I also expected them to be geographically more diverse. No special operation has been selected for the thirteenth century and, out of the six, the first three take place in the Holy Land between the 11th and 12th century whereas the three others take place in France during the 14th, 15th and 16th century, respectively. This is not, however, a criticism in any way: the narratives are rather good, entertaining, lively and enjoyable.

His book certainly meets its objectives and is worth a solid four stars, but not quite five stars, in my view. Warmly recommended.

Not your typical Stepbrother book

I have been a longtime fan of Selena Kitt's. I like the way she can tiptoe taboo topics without totally turning me off of the book. That being said, I have pretty much stayed away from the "stepbrother" genre for the most part. I'm a rebel and don't like to read "what's popular". There was something about this blurb and cover that screamed read me. I am so glad I did.
The author has outdone herself with this book. That's saying a lot because she is the mistress of reinvention. I am pretty confident in saying that this may be the best book she has written. It has the sexiness of her previous books with a juicy, gripping story. You get hit with a secret towards the end of the book that I personally did not see coming. That's hard to do, I have an unfortunate habit of being able to predict books. Tilley and Beast are my new favorite couple. Beast's grittiness vs Tilly's soft innocence keeps you stuck to the page.

The author did a fantastic job at slowly rolling out the back story so you didn't feel a hitch in the story. It's a pet peeve with me when it feels like the author stops the story with "oh yeah so let's stop and tell what happened 3 years ago". It felt organic and true to the story. I swear the author has been watching my family because I have about 3 of Tilly's mom Liv floating around.
It's a story of loss, lust, innocence, control and some pretty kick butt action. It's not your typical stepbrother book. It's hot, sad and downright sweet at times. The recipe for a perfect book.

Had a great ending

Well, breaking this book down, I can say that I enjoyed some if it. I would've enjoyed more of it if Tilly wouldn't have been such a brat, so naive and ultimately so dense. For the love of God, she was constantly complaining Beast treated her like a spoiled brat, yet she kept averting like one. And the way she let her mother control hey life, OMG grow a backbone for Pete's sake!!! I really liked Beast but Tilly I absolutely loathed, her aunt Meg, and especially her mother. Oh and Frankie wasn't such a good friend if she"noticed" Tully's state of mind and moods, yet was completely clueless and flirted frequently with Beast in front of Tilly. I liked the story, the BDSM Club, Beast and of course Miles, and the fact it has a HEA, but most out the book I wanted to slap Tilly with her own book!

Sweet...Passionate...Thrilling!

I always enjoy Ms. Kitt's books! This one was no exception. Steps rekindle a previous affair, but we as readers find out SO MUCH about their past in the process...definitely a winner. Toward the end the book became predictable but that could be me. Once you've read so many books you begin to see where the author is going with the story line. Several times it appeared the author could have used a better editor. Two verbs in the same sentence, back-to-back!? Someone couldn't decide which verb to use so figured they'd catch at edit...but didn't. Overall a very sweet, but passionate and thrilling read. I highly recommend!

Very informative and interesting

I faithfully listened to "The Invention of Childhood" which was (and is currently being) broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This is such an interesting topic and the the narrator, Michael Morpurgo, really captivates the listener. I actually came to the Amazon website to see if there was a compilation in book or audio format where I could have it all in one shot.
So many people in our world today think that life as we know it now was always like this. This history of childhood tells us that many things we take for granted today (child support, orphanages, elimination of child labour, education for girls) are things that were nonexistent a century before.
If you are at all interested in history, you must listen to this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed both the radio series and the book. The book was well-written, engaging and sufficiently intellectual without appearing too snobby or the author being too fascinated with the sound of his own 'voice'. This is history telling at its best. High recommended.
