Dobyns at his best
By A Customer
I first picked up a copy of Black Dog/Red Dog when I was a teenager, and it blew my mind. Since that moment, Dobyns has been one of my favorite poets. Much of the poetry is raw and/or angry, but it is never self indulgent. The poems are written in his characteristic prose like style, and you can see the influence of his journalism background. These are some of the most powerful and honest poems I have ever come across. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry.

black gun, red gun
By megabigeye
I suppose that these poems aren't for everyone, nor is the poet. but then, what is? I personally love them (the poems and the poet), though I know poeple that don't.

Some claim that Dobyns's verse is too prosaic, that it is closer to prose, broken into lines, than it is to actual poetry. I would argue that the poems in this volume are closer to prose poetry, than to prose or poetry, per se. Dobyns's style does not consist of subtlety of language, but straight forward sentences with subtle rhythms. The sentences are often short and forceful, violent. Others are longer and equally vivid, and together they create that subtle rhythm of words and ideas. "This morning as dawn broke I was walking / at the outskirts of town. I saw the first light / strike the clapboard front of the general / store next to the woods, reflect from the silver / chrome of a chash register in the front window." (from "Caverns of Darkness," p. 5) The attentive reader will recognize that these poems are not simple-minded. One need not read each poem over and over to catch each line, but in order to make sense of each poem as a whole. The ideas are as subtle as the rhythms, but once they hit you.... you'll realize you can only read one at a time. These poems need a bit of time to soak in, to wallow in the misery, and to finally come 'round and think maybe things aren't so bad after all. In a dark world, or a dark night, Stephen Dobyns sees a faint light, stray and shimmering.

Dobyns Does Not Improve With Age
By A Customer
Stephen Dobyns has consistently been a boring poet, that is, he calls himself a poet and his editors have gone along with the subterfuge. He writes mostly prose broken into lines. When he reads, his prosiness becomes even more apparent and unbearable. Why is he considered one of the country's best poets? I have no idea. The only thing I can figure is that we have reached the sorry pass where our academic MFA professors and their students like anything that doesn't sound like poetry. No need to despair, though. There are still good poets out there. YOu likely won't find them being published in the pages of our most "respected" journals, like APR or Poetry, however.

The Big Honey Hunt, 50th Anniversary Edition (The Berenstain Bears), by Stan Berenstain

This classic Beginner Book written by Stan and Jan Berenstain—and edited by Dr. Seuss—is the debut of the beloved Berenstain Bears! The Bear family has run out of honey, and Father Bear and Small Bear are sent to get more. But rather than just get some at the store as Mother Bear suggested, Father Bear decides to follow a bee and get fresh honey from the source. Early readers and established Berenstain Bears fans will lap up this sweet, adventurous (and misadventurous) tale.

Originally created by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books encourage children to read all by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning.

"Carried along by rhyme and rhythm, enlivened by humorous, colorful illustrations."--Chicago Tribune.

From the Inside Flap
According to Papa Bear, a bear must use his "smarts" to search for honey. When he brings Brother Bear along on a hunt for honey, it takes more than a few missteps to outsmart the Bears.

From the Back Cover
This is another thriller about the Berenstain Bears. They are going on a honey hunt in this story.

Gotta love Papa!

Love these old books! Got this to send to a sweet like 4 year old that loves "The Bike Lesson". So much fun to see this generation having the opportunity to enjoy these older Berenstain books!

Teaching reading
By Page Hudson
This pleasant book I remembered from my childhood and have read it to my 3 children scores of time. With similar books (eg: 'The Bike Lesson', 'Sam and the Firefly', 'Danny and the Dinosaur')my kids learned to read by age 4 and had a tremendous time doing it. There is something pleasant in these simple adventures and the action, the humor, makes the repetition easy.

Back in the day....
By kennedy19
The Berenstains should be remembered for their beginning reader books of the sixties and early seventies. Back then, the drawing style was more free, the stories were simple but clever, and the bears were a memorably comic tour de force. (In latter years they became cranked-out and preachy, and dealt with all sorts of issues in longer picture books and novels. Bah.) What child has ever completely forgotten the impages of their early adventures? In this, their first book, we meet Papa Bear, the bluff but incompetent teacher, and his son, the woshipful pupil who is actually smarter than the teacher. Off they go with a bucket to get some real honey from bees, eschewing the store next to their house. A series of comic misadventures ensure, climaxing with the bears being chased by a swarm of bees and hiding underwater. They return home to buy honey the easy way, as Mama told them to do in the first place. Funny, concise, and still fun after all these years - such are the early Berenstain Bears.

Le Corbusier, the Noble Savage: Toward an Archaeology of Modernism, by Adolf Max Vogt

This revelatory study is the most unexpected and vital piece of Le Corbusier scholarship to appear in years. Adolf Max Vogt looks to the early, formative years of the architect's life as a key to understanding his mature practice, taking aim at such fundamental riddles as "Where did his design vocabulary come from?" and "How was his aesthetic sense formed?"

Vogt's investigation of LC's early life and education not only reveals important, previously unacknowledged influences on specific projects such as the League of Nations headquarters and the Villa Savoye, but also suggests why LC throughout his career preferred to lift buildings above the ground, to give them the appearance of "floating." By uncovering crucial dimensions of LC's early life and resurrecting primary documents and source materials overlooked by other scholars, this book changes the face of LC studies.

From Publishers Weekly
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, aka Le Corbusier, is a towering figure of modern architecture. He was also notoriously self-invented?from his self-aggrandizing nom d'architecte to his flagrant dissembling in his copious writings and sketchbooks about the origins of his ideas. Vogt, in this closely argued but readable book, takes as his task the reconstruction of the local and particular origins of the forms that Le Corbusier universalized. The nexus of his argument is the discoveries, beginning around 1850, of the remains of a prehistoric lake-dwelling culture in the Swiss Jura region, where Jeanneret grew up. Vogt shows how this historical awareness, awakened in Jeanneret as a child by its inclusion in the curriculum of the day, led to Le Corbusier's famous piloti, the reinforced-concrete columns he used to make his buildings seem to float above the ground. The author skillfully employs his subject's own argumentative technique of seamlessly blending word and picture?without resorting to the architect's trademark combination of soaring rhetoric and flimflam. Although Vogt's analysis of Le Corbusier's drawings and buildings (in particular, the unbuilt project for the League of Nations on Lake Geneva) is convincing and even moving, readers are left to ask themselves whether the architect, in suppressing public knowledge of his influences, doesn't demonstrate more wisdom toward them than Vogt has been in uncovering them. The author's "attempt to undercut the cult of genius" confronts the truth of Le Corbusier's genius itself: the artist's forceful reimagination of his antecedents?however obscure, provincial and contingent by themselves?makes the forms that result seem necessary, correct and inevitable. 265 illustrations.

Review

Scholarly and witty.

(Richard Weston Building Design)

Vogt has remained an outsider to the international 'Corb-Mafia.' This now turns out to be his strength. His approach is enormously refreshing.

(Stanislaus Von Moos, Universitat Zurich; author of Le Corbusier: Elements of a Synthesis)

I have rarely so much enjoyed a book on modern architecture. Vogt writes a very personal reflection on Le Corbusier, what made him into the architect he was, and through him what the Modern Movement was, and yet it is at the same time a timeless look at what creativity is in architectural design and architectural thought. This book may very well prove to be a seminal study for more than the history of architecture, but in that area it is definitely new, fresh, and delightful.

(Tom F. Peters, Professor and Director, Building and Architectural Technology Institute, Lehigh University)

Adolf Max Vogt's book…belongs to an exceedingly rare kind of scholarship. The author manages to survey and synthesize a vast and wide-ranging literature on the historical origins of architecture, and to assess the neglected manifestations of prehistoric conditions in the theory and practice of building in modern times…The language of Vogt's book has exceptional merit. He writes with great precision and argues with equal verve. His is a text larded with references and enriched by a lifetime of research…Vogt's manuscript belongs to the best of Le Corbusier scholarship.

(Kurt Forster, Professor, Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture, Zurich)

Physical and Dynamical Meteorology, by David Brunt

First published in 1934, and then in a second edition in 1939, this book gives a full account of theoretical meteorology as it was understood at the time. Where theory failed to explain phenomena, the author limited himself to a description of the phenomena and an indication of such theory as was felt to be helpful. Little of the first edition was omitted, but additions were made to many chapters of the second edition, and the chapter on turbulence in the atmosphere was completely rewritten.

Review
"Cool Tools is a refreshing antidote to the hype that surrounds the latest hot gadgets. Unimpressed by newness for newness' sake, Kelly is attracted to objects that have withstood the test of time -- and is passing those ideas on to others. It's a habit he learned while editing and publishing the Whole Earth Catalog, the bible of counterculture do-it-yourselfers who wanted in 'tools and ideas for the 21st century.'" (Leander Kahney, Wired News)

"Stewart Brand said that Cool Tools had captured the spirit of the Whole Earth Catalog but without taking on a counterculture and back-to-the-land philosophy. 'It proves that you can restart the essence of something,' he said." (John Markoff, New York Times)

"Cool Tools is what the Whole Earth Catalog always wanted to be." (Peter Schwartz, futurist, Salesforce)

"Jeff Bezos is a fan of e-mail newsletters such as Cool Tools, a compendium of technology tips and product reviews written by Kevin Kelly, a co-founder of Wired." (Brad Stone, author of The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon)

Cool Tools has been featured in "Best of the Web" lists, such as the following:* Forbes Best of the Web Directory* Alltop - Gadgets* New York Times Blogs 101 - Technology Toys & Cool Things

"When this fabulous, amazing, unputdownable book arrived at my studio I immediately spent two and a half hours in it, and then the next morning passed another three-hour stint of 'Wow — look at this! I could do that!' This book is more exciting — in both what it actually offers and what kind of life it suggests — than anything I've read for a very long time. It's an outstanding achievement in every sense — content, design, and quality.
— Brian Eno, musician, artist

"Flipping through Cool Tools is a completely different experience from reading the same material online. Long live dead trees!"
— David Pescovitz, Boing Boing

"If this doesn't solve some large part of your Christmas shopping challenges, you need a different set of people to whom you give Christmas presents. The book itself (a real print 463-page glossy-stock oversizer) is great either for young people starting a home, or geezers who are in touch with their youth who might want to be shocked and reminded why so much of their take-control-of-your-own-life life is the way it is, or somebody who just could use a striking coffee-table conversation-starter/stopper. And then there are the hundreds and hundreds of amazing things — "tools" defined extremely widely and deeply as stuff that really works reviewed by people who've actually used them — to give you more gift ideas."
— Joel Garreau, The Washington Post, author of Edge City and Radical Evolution

"I don't know an adjective large enough to do it justice."
— Michael Litchfield, Fine Homebuilding

"I love it. A worthy successor to the Whole Earth Catalog."
— Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography

"This is a roundup of over 1500 tool reviews with incredibly useful tips and how-tos covering just about everything you can imagine. On one page there will be a recommendation for a great truck (Toyota pickup) on another they'll be tips on learning how to swim properly (it's all about the stroke length). This is, without a doubt, my favorite book to come out in 2013."
— Sal Cangeloso, Geek.com

"The Cool Tools book was sitting on the counter of the bar when an old boatbuilding friend stopped by and immediately became immersed in it. His exact words: "I GET this! There's no buttons to press!"

"Best coffee table books = size of coffee table. Kudos for the beautiful Cool Tools collection."
— Scott McCloud, cartoonist

"Right now, do not pass Go, do not collect $200 . . . just grab a copy of Cool Tools: A Catalog of Possibilities. It's 460+ full-color pages of ear-to-ear grinning, hours of ooh-ing and aah-ing, and years of repetitive page-turning. After it arrived at my door, I lost almost two full hours in its pages before realizing just how much time had elapsed . . . and this was me just skimming the various sections and randomly jumping from item to item. Since then, I've lost a few more hours as I've started to methodically tackle specific sections that are relevant to a few special projects that interest me (right now)."
— James Floyd Kelly, GeekDad

"Most catalogs are short stories. This one is a catalog novel."
— Mark Pauline, Survival Research roboticist

"Covering topics from hand tools to adhesives, organizational oddments, bicycles that double as chainsaws, beer brewing, mushroom growing, milling and fabricating, and so much more, it's enough to make your brain hurt with all the ideas for projects."
— Michael Una, Inventables

"Bravo for this mega catalog. Back to the future!"
— Steven Leveen, CEO founder of Levenger's

"I find myself not only flabbergasted at the size and extent of this achievement but happily awash in the feeling I used to get from the Whole Earth Catalogs; that all may not be right with the world, but that it could be."
— Jim Woodring, illustrator and cartoonist

"The glorious Cool Tools is like my dream update of the Whole Earth Catalog."
— Steve Silberman, NeuroTribes

"Multiple head asplosions on every page. Amazing!"
— Mark Laidlaw, science fiction author

"Love you, Wirecutter, but we're breaking up while I work through this tome."

Extraordinarily useful, endlessly fascinating
By Home At Last
COOL TOOLS is a sprawling compilation of useful tool reviews that author Kevin Kelly and a thousand contributors wrote over a 10-year period on Kelly's blog of the same name. Every tool in this massive (472 pages, 11" x 14") collection was recommended by an avid tool user who actually used the tool. Every tool in COOL TOOLS is either the best, the cheapest, or the only thing that works.

As a former editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine, I thought I knew a bit about tools. Not anymore. Kelly and his crew have put together the most exhaustive, inventive and mind-bending selection of stuff I've ever seen. For starters, their definition of tools encompasses more or less every human activity on earth. So in addition to hand jacks that can raise 7000 lbs., the Teeny Turner (a pocket sized driver), portable band saws, and laser measuring tools, you can find the best source on how to buy a car cheaply, make a low-budget movies, brew your own beer, rear an optimistic child, design a logo, win a fight, soak in feral (!) hot springs, learn to swim efficiently, prepare for a natural disaster, vagabond the world, do something dangerous (and live to tell about it), run for local office and win, go solar on your roof, or (a great boon to Boomers) remember anything.

This list doesn't scratch the surface of what's in COOL TOOLS and that's one of the things that makes it so irresistible--you return to it again and again. Open it at random and you experience something like being six again, with a child's sense of delight and wonder at how clever people can be and what abundance this world holds. Like the Whole Earth Catalogue from 40 years ago, COOL TOOLS might just delight and empower a new generation of people who love learning--and doing. A most remarkable book.

Cool Tools is cool
By J. R. Compton
I still have a dozen or so Whole Earth Catalogs (WEC) from the last century. I visit author Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools site almost every day to see and read about the latest cool tools, and I could just afford this book, so I ordered it before it was published, and it has been open on my coffee table in my living room, ever since it arrived.

I page through it often and spend a lot of time reading about specific topics of interest to me - and I always learn new things - and even give attention to areas I'll probably never use.

It's a wish book and a daydream book and a down-and-dirty reality book. Nothing since the WEC has been as continually fascinating and educational. It reminds me of a New Age Sears Catalog of everything available - especially tools, which have always fascinated me.

I like that the book is easier to navigate than the site, which is still great for browsing, and though many of the tools reviewed are too esoteric for my direct use, it is still vastly interesting.

The type is a tad small. I keep wanting to command + it up to decent reading size for my elderly eyes, but I keep a bright lamp nearby for reading.

It's over-sized and heavy, and it's not comfortable reading closer to my eyes like most books. So I hunker down over it - maybe I should buy a podium desk, since they're listed along with everything else in the book. Or I might have given in five stars.

Tools you need to know about
By dgrover
If you ever enjoyed reading the Whole Earth Catalog, read no further. Just buy this. You know why.
If you are a reader of the Cool Tools blog, again, I'd say to just buy this. Yes, you've already read (or could read) much of the content on the site, but the book format (and the fact this is a hand-picked subset of the reviews from the blog) adds context and flow. You'll like curling up and paging through the oversize pages. Reviews within a category that were separated by months or years are side by side here in the book. QR codes take you directly to product pages. It is a nicely realized, physical thing.
Never heard of Cool Tools blog or the WEC? Check out the Cool Tools blog to get an idea of the tone (tell us about a cool tool, one that you'd recommend to a good friend) and subjects. This is a compilation of "cool tools"--tools that represent things you either never knew existed, or an extraordinary value. (The book itself qualifies as among the coolest of tools.)
The categories are wide ranging, from cooking, crafts, learning, music, family, electronics and more. There's certain to be some area of immediate interest, but half the fun is the insight into the tools of the trade of some activity you may never have considered like beekeeping or world travel on a shoestring budget.
There are some images with jarringly-low resolution, a few typos here and there, but overall a very nicely done book.
(Disclosure--I received an early copy because a review I contributed years ago to the site was included in the book, but I'll be ordering more copies.)
