Alice and the Fly, by James Rice

Greg is cripplingly shy, afraid of spiders, and obsessed with Breakfast at Tiffany's. He's not exactly the most popular kid at his high school. In fact, he pretty much goes out of his way to avoid talking to anybody he doesn't have to. And it doesn't help that he has a severe lisp.

But Greg's English teacher, Miss Hayes, can see that there's something different about him. He's insightful and sensitive beyond his years, and maybe--just maybe--he'll use these strengths to break out of his shell someday. Miss Hayes urges Greg to keep a journal. "This isn't an assignment," she tells him, "just write down your thoughts."

Greg begins to write about everything from his mother's ill-conceived interior decorating ideas to his job at the local butcher's shop. When Greg begins to take an interest in a girl at his school named Alice, he realizes that he will have to face his most paralyzing anxieties if he wants to befriend Alice and help her escape from her violent family life.

Review
"Debut novelist Rice has turned in an extraordinarily accomplished effort, beautifully plotted and structured, emotionally resonant, and filled with multidimensional characters, especially, of course, Greg, whose condition of being is never less than persuasive -and that will excite a keen empathy from readers. May he have many of them."―Booklist, Starred Review

''This is a novel about loneliness, and Rice vividly evokes the isolation of all those trapped inside the need to present a socially valid exterior. His writing is fuelled by a powerful sense of empathy, even for those whose aspirations he so expertly ridicules. For all the bleakness it portrays Alice and the Fly is an oddly uplifting novel.''

― The Guardian

"Alice and the Fly is a darkly quirky story of love, obsession and fear. A disconcerting but beautiful story hung around the enchanting and heartbreaking voice of teenager Greg."

―Anna James, The Bookseller

''One of the most stunning debuts I've read in a long time. The talent behind it is huge.''

―Helen Walsh, author of The Lemon Grove

"gives a good insight into the unstable mind of a troubled young man, and I would definitely read more from this author."―A House of Books

"It's thrilling, gripping, heart-stopping and somehow moving at the same time. This isn't a story for the weak of heart. I'm still blown away that this is actually the author's debut and I'll definitely be checking out whatever he puts out next."―Quite the Novel Idea

"The novel takes on a disturbing and creepy feeling as it progresses and I couldn't dare put it down."―Book Likes

"It is no small feat to get into the mind of a disturbed teen. But James Rice does so skillfully in his debut novel . . . Rice propels readers into and beyond J.D. Salinger territory . . . This book may make readers take another look at the misfits among us whom we dismiss at their - and society's - peril."
―Star Tribune

"the world needs more books like this"―Silke Reads and Writes

What a tangled web we weave....
By Tommy Dooley
We all have a Room 101 where we would have to meet our ultimate fear and inevitably crumple. Well meet Greg his ultimate fear are spiders and his phobia is so bad he cant even say the word `spider' - he just uses the term -`THEM'. He lives with his parents and sister, but had previously been sent to live with his Grand mother at the wrong end of town.

Greg sees THEM all over the place and even hears them. He is a social outcast, which is exasperated by his lisp and inability to connect with others. His teacher, Miss Hayes, keeps coming up with theories as to how to help him. One is to write a journal in which he can express himself. He is also infatuated with the Alice in the title, and much of his journal is dedicated to her, his feelings and plans.

He is prone to fit when the pressure gets too much and has to take his meds. However, he is seemingly making little progress and the journal starts to reveal what he feels will finally help him be happy, irrespective of the others involved.

This is a really well written book, it is engaging and has a story line that is both unusual and has enough happening to keep you hooked. This is a debut from James Rice and he has certainly made an impact. Also I ploughed through this in a few sessions, and I do read a lot but generally take my time, so that has to be a testament to how creative the writing was, I very much look forward to his next book.

A stunning debut novel
By Z. de Ruiter
There has been a lot of excitement around the upcoming release of Alice and the Fly already and rightfully so as it's a beautiful, heartbreaking, insightful and most of all moving piece of writing. There were more than just strong hits within the pages of last year's Costa Book of the Year-winner The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer, which also delves into the struggles of mental illness as seen through the written word of its main character, and I predict this debut by James Rice will do equally well in the book awards coming up in 2015.

Greg is afraid of THEM. The teenager has obsessively taped shut every crack and cranny in his bedroom to ensure that THEM cannot get in. Despite his fear, and his otherwise excessive obsessive behaviour, Greg goes to a normal school and shares classes with kids his own age. They have noticed that he is different though, referring to him as 'psycho', and he doesn't have any friends. Until one day his eyes fall upon Alice. Alice who wears dark sunglasses inside and who, despite coming from The Pit (the bad part of town), is friends with one of the most popular girls in school.

Through a series of diary entries the reader discovers the story of Greg and Alice. It's a for the most part a one-sided relationship carefully written down by Greg, but the chapters are interspersed with transcripts from conversations between Greg's family and classmates with the police. From the very first transcript the reader knows that something terrible has happened, and it's only a matter of time before we find out that someone was hurt - or worse.

Greg's story and his everlasting battle against THEM slowly escalates as his diary entries progress into a jumbled collection of sometimes coherent and sometimes confusing thoughts, with lines between fact and fiction blurring with each passing day. The build up of tension within the novel was subtle but oh so very clever and when about midway through I feared what devastating journey Greg was on, I was already so invested in the hugely compelling tale that I found it impossible to put the book down - even though I knew its ending was going to be a tragic one.

Despite the size of the novel this was a surprisingly quick read; I tried to slow my reading pace down at times, relishing the words and the story they formed, yet I finished it in just a few hours. On the one hand, I was completely gripped by Greg's story and didn't want it to end, but on the other, even spending such a short time with Greg and his family, the inevitable conclusion already completely broke my heart and I can only imagine how much worse the impact would've been had I spent days in his company.

There's been an increase in commercial fiction novels which tackle the previously hushed-topic of mental illness and I'm glad there's now more awareness about this mostly hidden disease. Hopefully it will lead to a better understanding as to what a lot of people are struggling with on a day-to-day basis, even if it isn't obvious on the surface. Greg's story is just one example of how ignoring isolated incidents escalating into recurring symptoms can have dangerous consequences for all involved.

Greg's story was harrowing yet also innocent and it was beautifully crafted by James Rice, who really did the subject matter and his characters proud. It's a stunner of a novel and one I will think about long after turning the final page.

I thought the book was well-written and there was terrific insight into the life of a lonely socially- isolated ...
By PJ, Queensland
This story is narrated by Greg who is a socially awkward ‘psycho’ teenager bullied at school because he has a mental illness. He has schizophrenia and a phobia of spiders (‘them’). These are in fact visual hallucinations which tend to terminate in a convulsion if his anxiety levels rise enough. Greg also has a lisp and avoids talking as much as possible. As a result, Greg receives some counselling sessions from a teacher who has encouraged him to record his feelings in a journal, and this provides most of the narration. We are given the impression fairly early on in the book that all is not going to end well as there are a few police transcripts dotted throughout the book. These are interviews conducted by the police and involve discussions with teachers and relatives about Greg.
His father is ‘the Breast Man’ a plastic surgeon who specialises in breast augmentation. His mother is on a constant struggle to uphold some admirable social standing. His sister is a dancer who is also struggling in her teenage years not least because of the embarrassment of her brother, Greg. They are all struggling in their own way so that Greg’s problem tends to get swept under the carpet.
Greg becomes smitten by a girl called Alice who travels on his bus. Her father also manages the butcher shop where Greg works. Alice has her own problems and Greg becomes very protective of her.
This is somehow an enjoyable read, but an uncomfortable journey. To be taken so deeply into Greg’s thoughts is unsettling. He is likeable and innocent and in need of so much help.
I thought the book was well-written and there was terrific insight into the life of a lonely socially- isolated teenager, but I did not think his psychiatric illness was very medically accurate. I accepted this as it rolled along with the rest of the story quite well.

Engaging Read
By LAS Reviewer
A mistress in high society is something frowned upon by the entire ton, but what if your mistress is really a high born woman trying to make a better life for her siblings? And once a mistress, can she rise from that title or will she never be allowed to darken certain doors again? What happens when her protector is someone that she falls in love with? Can he ever learn to love her or are she doomed to die of a broken heart?

Charlotte, a high bred women from the country, is willing to do whatever must be done to give her three younger sisters the chances that she never had, and by anything she means anything; even selling herself as a mistress and doing all that it takes to please the man who purchases her. What Charlotte doesn't expect is for a man like Lucas Morgan to want her, especially at the high price he paid for her. She is willing to give everything she has to make him happy, but in giving herself away she may just get the heart of Mr. Morgan? Will Charlotte know what to do with his heart if he is willing to give it away?

Lucas, lost twin of the Earl of Westhunt, is on the prowl for a mistress. Specifically, one that his twin had once had his eye on. But the woman Lucas buys is nothing like what he is expecting. But will the hunt for his brother's killer lead these two down a path that can't be unwalked? And if Lucas falls for Charlotte, can she learn to love him or will he lose her to the next highest bidder?

This was a wonderful tale that showed the underbelly of high society, all the corrupt natures of the ton while still showing that love can survive even the worst of circumstances. Lucas and Charlotte's story was wonderful because of the story line itself, not only the suspense but the unexpected blossoming of feelings that happens between the main characters.

As a reader, I would love for Ms. Silver to work this story into a series. The characters were so great to "meet" and interact with and I'd love to read more about Charlotte, Lucas and Charlotte's three sisters. Author Lynne Silver spun a wonderful story and anyone who picks up this book will not be disappointed. She will definitely be on my list of authors to read in the future!

Mystery, suspense, and romance - My kind of book!

You might think upon starting this book that Charlotte is all innocent and unassuming, but she really knows what she’s doing. It was loyal of her to think of her sisters and to put herself in a situation that could easily spell disaster. I liked that she was determined to “sell” herself – her innocence, her virtue, and her life, basically – just so her sisters could have a better life. It was sort of funny that the entire time she was on stage, being ogled by all these strangers, that she had a running diatribe in her mind of various things, like smiling, what she could do if she felt faint, the doubts she had of whether or not the curtains would hold her up – which she doubted. Morgan was awesome. He had a purpose and was trying to be all selfless and noble. Unfortunately, since Charlotte had other plans, his purpose was immediately thrown out the window. I loved how instead of being all crying and fitful, Charlotte takes charge and decides this is going to work, and doesn’t take no for an answer.

In fact, that’s the one thing that runs throughout the entire book. Charlotte doesn’t take no for an answer. She is strong, she will do this, and you are going to do this with her. Period. Even when it turns out that there is a reason why Morgan hates his brother, Charlotte wants to help him figure out exactly what happened while he was gone.

Also, it was a nice surprise that the author, Lynne Silver, lets the book take a turn into a mystery, suspense, and romance. It was a great book full of humor, romance, and mystery. My kind of book.

Couldn't finish this...
By Amocca
I have no idea what book the reviewer above me read - but it could not have been this one... Admittedly, I couldn't actually finish this book, so I guess a review of the complete story would not be in my grasp, I can however guess the completely ridiculous and unrealistic ending that this would result in... so I don't feel too cheted out - except for the money I spent buying the kindle book...

The writing is appalling, but so is the story, so I guess those two go together. The premise of the story is that faced with the fact that an unknown cousin has inherited her estate our destitute heroine decides to sell herself as a whore in order to finance her younger sisters season - how she proposes that her sister would ever be able to be seen in company after she sells herself, the author chooses to skirt over by giving her a "stage name" as a whore - that way apparently no one will ever know!

Our hero has been away from England for 7 years, but is now back to investigate the murder of his older brother... He comes complete with an evil identical twin, which he believes murdered the older brother in question. In order to save our heroine from the dastardly deeds of said evil twin, he purchases our virginal whore of a heroine in front of his brother...

He then tries to get rid of her - having no need or wish for a mistress. She manages to charm herself in to his good graces with a bit of well-timed "oral attention" in his carriage... and he takes her home... after this the story just gets worse... He tries to solve his brothers murder, she tries to have sex with him, to make sure she gets paid and so forth... presumably they fall in love and end up getting married? I wouldn't know, I was bored to tears before I got half way through the book and had to stop...

This novel seems to have a problem identifying what it wants to be... Is it an erotic novel or a romance? It fails on both accounts. The sex is bland and vanilla and poorly written. And if it is a love story, it has such a ridiculous and unrealistic feel to it, that it it totally unbelievable...

Don't buy it.

Who Killed Christopher Robin? The Truth behind the Murder of Brian Jones, by Terry Rawlings

Accompanied by a CD of recordings by Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and a bogus taped confession staged as a publicity stunt in the early 1980s, this book reveals the identity of what it claims is Jones's true murderer. The author has built up a record of Jones's life, his financial position at the time of his death, and a chronology of events in the days and hours leading up to it. A new pathologist's report and a re-examination of the police evidence corroborate both the stories of those who were present at Jones's house on the fatal day and a sworn affidavit from the man who witnessed the alleged murderer's confession. The book includes previously-unpublished photographs of Jones at home, and of the alleged murderer.

How to Live a Good Life: Soulful Stories, Surprising Science, and Practical Wisdom, by Jonathan Fields

Seriously . . . another book that tells you how to live a good life? Don’t we have enough of those?
You’d think so. Yet, more people than ever are walking through life disconnected, disengaged, dissatisfied, mired in regret, declining health, and a near maniacal state of gut-wrenching autopilot busyness.
Whatever is out there isn’t getting through. We don’t know who to trust. We don’t know what’s real and what’s fantasy. We don’t know how and where to begin and we don’t want to wade through another minute of advice that gives us hope, then saps our time and leaves us empty.
How to Live a Good Life is your antidote; a practical and provocative modern-day manual for the pursuit of a life well lived. No need for blind faith or surrender of intelligence; everything you’ll discover is immediately actionable and subject to validation through your own experience.
Drawn from the intersection of science, spirituality, and the author’s years-long quest to learn at the feet of masters from nearly every tradition and walk of life, this book offers a simple yet powerful model, the “Good Life Buckets”—spend 30 days filling your buckets and reclaiming your life.
Each day will bring a new, practical yet powerful idea, along with a specific exploration designed to rekindle deep, loving, and compassionate relationships; cultivate vitality, radiance, and graceful ease; and leave you feeling lit up by the way you contribute to the world, like you’re doing the work you were put on the planet to do.
How to Live a Good Life is not just a book to be read; it’s a path to possibility, to be walked, then lived.

A Fresh Perspective on Finding Meaning through Everyday Life
By Chris Guillebeau
I've known Jonathan for more than 8 years, during which time I've learned a great deal from him. We've spoken at events together (WDS, SXSW, TEDx, others) and he's the person I've written about on my blog more than any other.

Everything he does is top quality, but this book is in another league—he calls it his most personal ever, and there's no doubt of that. In a highly readable, storytelling style, he takes you through popular science and real-world experiences from people you've never heard of (and some you have) to learn ways of improving your relationships, helping you contribute to the world more deeply, and, well, living a good life.

By the way, it's probably clear that Jonathan is a friend and mentor to me, but I did NOT receive a complimentary copy of this book—I bought my own and now I am buying many more to hand out.

Making a Good Life Simple
By Amanda Johnson
As a message coach, I have UNREASONABLY HIGH STANDARDS for books. I read them and often think, "If only the author had..." because I naturally see the potential of books to change the reader's life, and it bums me out to see them fall short.

Not with this book!

Jonathan did all the work, so that the reader can just focus on applying all of the insights and research he's shared. He did the research, read the self-help books, tested it all out...and then somehow packed it all into 4-5 powerful pages per topic completely masterfully.

I'll be sharing this book with all of my loved ones, clients, and everyone else crosses my path, hungry for a good life.

A Yes to this Book is a Yes to Yourself
By William "Bill" Brown
A few years ago my life seemed ideal to others but to me it felt like a house of cards waiting for a strong wind to bring it crashing to the ground. During this time of unease and stress I found out about Good Life Project podcast and Camp and I grabbed on as if my life depended on it. Little did I know that that strong wind I was fearing was a couple of months away. And I had incredible friends and people in this tribe to help me see though the pile of cards after the fall.

When I listen to the podcasts I feel a connection, like I'm apart of the thoughtful, inspiring and uplifting conversations that I long for and so often find lacking in my life. The Camp is all of this plus smiles, hugs and laughter.

This Book for me is my opportunity to create a life, a circle of influence , a local tribe that I know to my bones will change the world.

This Book challenges me to take actions on things that I feel in my core but have refused to acknowledge.

This Book empowers me to stand in my own strength and not use the loving, encouraging and nurturing tribe as crutch or something I long to connect to once a year.

So now I can say, never again will I let my life have the appearance of being Good. And I will be able to know why it is and I will share it with whom ever wants it for themselves. And This Book helps me keep this promise to myself .
