See reviews for second edition
By Myrna Minkoff
If you are looking for reviews (which do not exist, as I write), check out the second edition, which has a number of reviews. Long story short: This is a much admired, "standard" among Alpine guidebooks although there seems to be a consensus among folks who actually have done the trek that it is prudent to supplement this book with detailed topo maps and/or other resources.

(The Kindle sample chapter is nice, especially on a PC or Kindle Fire where you can enjoy the full-color photos. My hard copy is on the way.)

(The Wall Street Journal published a nice account of the trek on 5/5/12 mentioning this book. Search "WSJ Mont Blanc." The hikers were a youngish couple but not especially athletically fit.)

Standard English guide for the TMB, and with good reason.
By deus_ex_libris
Concise but comprehensive guide to the Tour du Mont Blanc. I used it for the TMB in 2012 and found it accurate with respect to navigation, public transport options, & contact details for refuges & other accommodation. Daily distances & times, as Mr Reynolds takes pains to point out, are exclusive of time spent eating, drinking, resting, photography or otherwise admiring the jaw-dropping scenery. My experience is that quoted walking times would be approximately accurate for someone with good prior conditioning carrying a light pack in good weather. The author has hiked extensively in the Alps, publishing many guides, and is sometimes prone to make distinction where none exist to the less mountain-weary. An example of this would be that he is, on occasion, somewhat dismissive of non-glaciated terrain which, to me, is not devoid of its own aesthetic charm.

Essential guide to doing the TMB
By Valorie Ann
We did the hike in 2013 after reading about the hike in the WSJ. I researched the hike and learned about this guide as well as a web site walkingtheTMB which has individual experiences about doing the hike from people around the world. We studied this guide beforehand and referenced it daily during the hike. It hasn't been updated since 2012 and some information about refuges available may be out of date. Some new ones have been added that we learned about along the way. This book was used by virtually everyone we met who does the walk from all around the world. In fact we met several fellow walkers in restaurants when we saw them refering to the book. If you read this book you do not need to hire a guide or pay a tour company to support you on the trek. If you are reasonably fit and know how to read a map you can do the hike as a self-guided trip. It will be the experience of a lifetime.

Just what I needed
By SoDak Thriver
Right after I got the autism diagnosis for my son I realized that behavioral therapy would be our main focus of treatment and due to financial constraints, I would be the primary therapist.

After reading some really heady and intellectual literature on behavioral therapy I just wanted to scream, "Yes, I know, but tell me what to do!!"

A Work in Progress does just that. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

Practical, Informative & Accurate
By M. Welker
This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to set up formal ABA programming for their child or for anyone who wants to understand the steps of development in specific areas such as making conversation, understanding the difference between yes/no and learning how to read. I found the checklists at the back of the book to be the most helpful. I have had extensive training (as a parent) in ABA principles and Discrete Trial Training procedures and I found that this book was accurate and gave the right amount of detail when I wanted to set up my own programs to be implemented in my home.

A Work In Progress: Behavioral Management Strategies & A Curriculum for Intesive Behavioral Treatment of Autism
By R. M. Keller
This book gives a parent, teacher, or any other person who has an autistic child how to understand the reason for the child's behavior and the how to manage this behavior. It is an excellent source to understand how children can be taught in a classroom setting, or in a different enviornment. As a grandparent of two autistic children this book has helped me understand their behavioral patterns. I was able to see how their classroom instuction has followed many of the recommendations mentioned in this book.

Great way to learn muscle anatomy and exercise form at the same time
By Tom Venuto, author of Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle
I owned the first edition of Strength Training Anatomy (blue cover) for nearly 15 years and I've been recommending this book to my clients for that long as well. I decided to pick up the new 3rd edition (red cover) to update my library and also to write this review.

This book's concept and contents have been imitated many times, but Delavier's is the original and the best.

In a nutshell, Strength Training Anatomy is a book of expertly drawn illustrations of the human body (over 600) performing weight training exercises. The primary muscles being worked are colored in red and clearly labeled. The bones, muscle fibers and muscular attachments are also beautifully illustrated.

The book is divided into seven sections: Arms, Shoulders, Chest, Back, Legs, Buttocks and Abdomen. No space is wasted with introductions - the book jumps right into arms in the opening pages. A page is devoted to each exercise, and a small amount of text accompanies each illustration, explaining proper form and giving additional tips or precautions. Sidebars show exercise variations, start and finish positions and additional details (such as deep muscle anatomy with the exact muscle tendon insertions on the bone).

The length is 192 pages, so it's not overwhelming - it's very digestible, yet it's also very thorough in terms of the number of exercises covered. All the major and important barbell and dumbbell exercises are included. In addition, you'll learn a variety of cable exercises and a handful of common and useful machine exercises.

I don't think there's any reader from any demographic or experience level that won't benefit from owning this book. It will be appreciated by all ages and by men and women, especially since both male and female models are used in the illustrations. For beginners, this could be a training instruction "bible" for learning how to do the exercises properly and understanding exactly what muscles are working.

Some people might suggest this book is only suited for the beginner, but I think advanced trainees and even fitness professionals will find this book valuable as a reference guide and may even want to keep it on their shelf within arms reach.

This material is not just for bodybuilders, but as a bodybuilder myself, I think there is another potential benefit of this book that I haven't seen anyone else mention. Bodybuilders need to develop the ability to visualize muscle actions and learn how to enhance their mind to muscle connection. Studying the drawings and looking at the muscles engaged, the direction of the fibers and where they insert and attach could be a great tool to help with these mental skills.

As for the 3rd edition, there is new material in this update, including much more content (it's longer, with more exercises). There are also new sections on stretching and avoiding common injuries.

The publisher, Human Kinetics consistently puts out some great titles, and this is among the best of them. The book quality is excellent, including the cover, binding, paper, and again, the illustrations on every page are fantastic. The author is clearly a skilled artist who also has a medical-level understanding of the human body.

Potential readers should know before buying, that this book does not contain workout programs - it focuses solely on individual exercise instruction and exercise anatomy. That doesn't detract from the value in my opinion, it actually helps keeps this volume concise and focused on one thing: strength training exercises and anatomy.

On that note, again, this is not a text-heavy book and while you do get an explanation and illustration of each exercise, you don't get
in-depth written details on biomechanics and muscle actions. You're mainly getting exercise instruction and muscle anatomy lessons.

Also, this IS an anatomy book, so if looking at body parts and human anatomy bothers you, then you might want to take a pass. (All body parts are depicted, in places).

In summary, this book deserves its 5-star ratings, and its sales and longevity in the fitness book market are not surprising.

A dissapointment after the original masterpiece.
By Amazon Customer
I was disappointed in this book. I was expecting another masterpiece like the original 'Strength Training Anatomy'. Instead, this book is disjointed and confusing.

A lot of the illustrations were taken from Strength Training Anatomy. There's even one drawing with a description that gives a correction about the form - instead of making a new drawing, the writer just lazily reused a drawing from the previous book.

Most of the new illustrations are mediocre photos. Also, this book focuses entirely on dumbbell training, no barbell work is included.

I feel like some of the workout routines are interesting and I will be trying them. Still, this book rates only a 'meh' due to the sloppy way it was constructed.

Amazing resource!
By Cameron Keim
First off, since you're here, I'm assuming you have some interest in strength training. If you had to mull it over or answered the obvious 'duh bro' then get this book!
I've been into strength training for 10 years and with all the research, planning, tracking I was still missing a lot more than I thought. Strength Training Anatomy is packed with information on every page. Showing you a huge amount of movements and exercises. Not only does it go through proper form but it explains everything. This really helped me at creating my own plans. But the Illustrations...they are just as good as the writing. Showing the high and low points of muscle stretching in amazing detail. I've passed this down to buddies of mine, family members...and they were all impressed!
This is a resource to help you GROW. Both in knowledge and in size! Whether your goals are bulking and packing on size, or losing weight the way everyone should, this book will help you take it to the next level!

Why Orwell Matters, by Christopher Hitchens

In this widely acclaimed biographical essay, Christopher Hitchens assesses the life, the achievements, and the myth of the great political writer and participant George Orwell. In true emulative and contrarian style, Hitchens is both admiring and aggressive, sympathetic yet critical, taking true measure of his subject as hero and problem. Answering both the detractors and the false claimants, Hitchens tears down the façade of sainthood erected by the hagiographers and rebuts the critics point by point. He examines Orwell and his perspectives on fascism, empire, feminism, and Englishness, as well as his outlook on America, a country and culture towards which he exhibited much ambivalence. Whether thinking about empires or dictators, race or class, nationalism or popular culture, Orwell's moral outlook remains indispensable in a world that has undergone vast changes in the fifty years since his death. Combining the best of Hitchens's polemical punch and intellectual elegance in a tightly woven and subtle argument, this book addresses not only why Orwell matters today, but how he will continue to matter in a future, uncertain world.Christopher Hitchens, one of the most incisive minds of our own age, meets Orwell on the page in this provocative encounter of wit, contention and moral truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Vanity Fair and Nation contributor Hitchens passionately defends a great writer from attacks by both right and left, though he also refutes those fans who proclaim his sainthood. George Orwell (1903-1950), a socialist who abhorred all forms of totalitarianism, was, as Hitchens points out, prescient about the "three great subjects of the twentieth century:" imperialism, fascism, and Stalinism. In all things, Orwell's feelings were every bit as visceral as intellectual, and Hitchens devotes some of his best writing to describing Orwell's first-hand experiences with empire in Burma. It was there that he learned to hate racism, bullying and exploitation of the lower classes. "Orwell can be read," notes Hitchens, "as one of the founders of... post-colonialism." Orwell's insights about fascism and Stalinism crystallized in Spain, while he was fighting in the Civil War. Hitchens offers an excellent analysis of the writer's women, both real (his wives) and fictional, to show that the feminist critique of Orwell (that he didn't like strong, brainy women) may be unfair, though Hitchens also points out what feminists have ignored: Orwell's "revulsion for birth control and abortion." Hitchens brilliantly marshals his deep knowledge of Orwell's work. Fans of Orwell will enjoy Hitchens's learned and convincing defense, while those unfamiliar with Orwell may perhaps be induced to return to the source. (Oct.) Forecast: Hitchens has made a splash with recent books (Letters to a Young Contrarian and The Trial of Henry Kissinger). Basic is banking on similar success with a 30,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Far from being an ordinary biography, this small volume is an in-depth investigation of the essential George Orwell-"the heart on fire and the brain on ice." Hitchens recognizes that Orwell was more than the author of 1984 and Animal Farm. He was a keen critic of Nazism and Stalinism and didn't soften his pictures of them to sell books. His analysis of the grave inequities of those two forms of government is sufficiently acute to apply to the early 21st century's political spectrum. While claiming that Orwell "requires extricating from a pile of saccharine tablets and moist hankies [as] an object of sickly veneration and sentimental over-praise," Hitchens, a columnist for Vanity Fair and the Nation, asserts that in contrast to his many contemporaries who wrote about the era's political issues (e.g., Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, and Cecil Day Lewis), "it [is] possible to reprint every single letter, book review and essay composed by Orwell without exposing him to any embarrassment"-a remarkable feat, indeed. The only problem with this study is that it assumes that the reader already knows that Orwell conscientiously overcame his early anti-intellectualism, his dislike of the "dark" people of the English Empire, and his squeamishness about homosexuality-all to become a great humanist. Thus, it is written for readers who have already done their homework. Recommended for large libraries with extensive political science holdings.

From Booklist
George Orwell is one of those rare writers who are both artistic and fluent in world events and politics. His shrewd, indelible novels are continually read and discussed all around the world, but Orwell, uncompromising and independent to the point of penury, didn't reach this pinnacle without adversity or controversy. Hitchens, an author and columnist for the Nation and Vanity Fair, whose combativeness and peppery eloquence are backed by wide-ranging erudition, reasserts Orwell's significance in this impassioned yet pinpoint assessment of the man, his writings, and their reception, which has been by turns sloppily negative or excessively positive. Hitchens dissects in fresh and insightful detail the "extraordinary salience" and ongoing relevance (hence the term Orwellian) of Orwell's complex subjects--imperialism, fascism, Stalinism, nuclear weapons, environmentalism--and parses the prescience that inspired Orwell to invent the expression cold war and foresee many of the global conflicts we're currently experiencing. Moving neatly from political commentary to literary criticism and biography, Hitchens clarifies all that Orwell accomplished and, by extension, affirms literature's unique and essential powers. Entertaining Book by a Tough-Minded Latter-day Disciple
By R. W. Rasband
Remarkably, as the 21st century opens George Orwell's shadow looms larger than ever over the world, undiminished by the end of the Cold War (a phrase which he probably invented). He is increasingly claimed by both Left and Right as one of their own. Two Englishmen now living in America, Andrew Sullivan and Christopher Hitchens, can best claim the mantle of Orwell by virtue of their clearsightedness and ability to cut through cant. Hitchens has written a short, bracing book on why "Animal Farm", "1984", and the collected essays are still essential reading. Orwell was a divided man. He was emotionally a conservative and intellectually a socialist. He was able to live out the contradiction and thus was blessed (or cursed) with the ability to see the big picture. Most of us in our own little lives are opportunists; our social and political views are shaped by what seems to us will allow us to rise in the world. Because of his awareness of his contradictions (and an unusual strength of will or character) Orwell could more closely approach "objectivity" (that noble dream) than most of us.
Hitchens claims that Orwell was right about the three big issues of the 20th century--imperialism, Fascism, and Communism: something almost no other of his contemporaries can claim. In the chapter "Orwell and the Left" Hitchens swiftly eviscerates those critics who see Orwell as a sellout (Including Edward Said, whose blurb approving of Hitchens' earlier work appears prominently on the dust jacket of this one.) In "Orwell and the Right" he establishes that Orwell did not advocate mindless aggression against the Communists. Orwell attacked James Burnham for his pessimism and Hitchens says that Orwell didn't want a nuclear first-strike against the Soviets as so many did--it would have killed many of the people who made the successful peaceful revolution against Communism 40 years later. Perhaps the most important chapter in this book is "Deconstructing the Post-Modernist: Orwell and Transparency" in which Hitchens explains Orwell's abiding concern with "objective truth" and exposes the bad faith of the deconstructionists. (A disbelief in demonstratable truth can cover an awful lot of sins.)
Hitchens has made a lot of news the past few years with his arguments with his friends on the Left. He detests Bill and Hillary Clinton; and he has broken with the anti-war movement because of what he says is its solipsism and anti-Americanism. In these things he is merely following the lead of his mentor Orwell, who angered many on the left with "Animal Farm" and "1984." But these books have been proved correct over the years as any books could be. I'm betting time will be kind to Hitchens, too.

Hitch Gushins...
By A Customer
It's nice to see the Hitch, old attack dog that he is, back off on the usual invective and give himself over to a 210 page fit of uncontrollable gushing. He's persuasive, too. It's hard not to come away from reading the book with a newfound respect for Orwell, for his "power of facing", and his fireproof integrity.
I can't help but feel that Hitchen's warning not to think of Orwell as a saint is just a fig leaf. Obviously, it's a cannonization essay, it's just that Hitch is too embarrassed to admit he's written such a thing. But why shouldn't we cannonize Orwell? Why shouldn't we take our hats off in awe at the man who saw each of the historical forces that would shape the next 50 years with such amazing clarity, all without ever abandoning an ethical code that would only be vindicated by everything that followed? Orwell's insights remain fresh, the power of his ethical vision remains urgently relevant, and as a role model on personal integrity, an inspiration for those who want to "walk the walk", we could scarcely do better.

Why Hitchens Writes
By Fred Wemyss (Actual Name)
Having been encouraged from about the age of twelve to read the essays of George Orwell I read Christopher Hitchens' recent meditation on him with a sense of gratitude. I haven't read any other work on Orwell which so perfectly conveys his inexhaustibility.
Hitchens' real achievement here is a mastery of Orwell's tone. Orwell's essays keep a reader up until dawn and WHY ORWELL MATTERS did the same to this reader.
I can't say I agree with everything in the book, and have to say that sometimes I didn't grasp Hitchens' arguments. But, the book is brief, and we know what Shakespeare said about brevity. The chief pleasure of this book is its style; learned from one of the greatest defenders of expressed thought.

A Must for Men
By SPOP
My husband and I pretty much read all Dr. Sears' books...we think he's great. I bought this book in particular for my husband as what I feel is the perfect "men's health" guide. He liked it a lot and put it into practice right away. Well all I can say is he's doing great. I definitely recommend this book to any male over 40 who is looking to achieve a healthy life.

Not for Men only!
By Eva Janzen
This book is a must read for both men and women. I initially read the book to see what topics affect men today, but then I realized this affects everyone. You see it everyday... Thirteen year old girls developed and appearing as if they are 21+ years old. Unreal! In learning how environmental chemicals and today's food can affect men so drastically it made me think what it is doing to me. This is a book to give to everyone to all your friends and family.

Great Programs
By Sandy Derose
I am a believer in Dr. Sears...I started out by purchasing the PACE book for myself and had such great success with the program. Could not believe how quickly I increased my stamina, reduced my body fat and just plain felt better. So excited that I found an exercise program that I could stick to with minimal efforts and maximum results I shared it with my family who to date has seen the same results. Because I was so impressed with Dr. Sears PACE program I decided to purchase Dr's Heart Cure and 12 Secrets to Virility for my Dad who has heart disease and diabetes. By slowly applying the principles of both books my Dad is now living a healthier and happier life. Dr. Sears gives sound, easy to follow and effective advice that anyone can do. I just purchased his new Sun book and can't wait to see what I can do to improve my health next. Please keep the books coming Dr. Sears, me and my family can't get enough!

A super stylish journey: The ultimate sourcebook for the best airline graphic design

This edition rounds up the most imaginative, influential and surprising designs of the airlines' commercial art from the “golden age of flying.” Arguably no other book has been produced with such technical sophistication in recent years. It provides an unprecedented outline of the development of the visual identities of thirteen pioneering airlines, combining innovative research and stunning, museum-like presentations of hundreds of spectacular aviation posters, other illustrations and photos.

Conceived by some of the world's top creative minds, such as Ivan Chermayeff, Otl Aicher, Massimo Vignelli, Academy Award winner Saul Bass, or advertising titan Mary Wells Lawrence, the designs found in the book's case studies also illustrate the shift from traditional methods of corporate design and advertising to comprehensive modern identity branding programs which took place in the same period.

To reproduce all of the images as precisely as possible, a total of seventeen different colors, five different varnishes, and two different methods of foil printing and embossing were used. The result is a book of exceptional vivacity that pushes the limits of modern art printing technology. The Premium Edition has received glowing reviews in leading media around the world, including The New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, New Republic, Slate, Adweek, and dozens of others in the United States, France, Britain, Germany, China, Japan, Switzerland, Austria, Australia, Spain, Italy, Norway, etc.

How the jet age of the airlines and brand identity need one another
By Joseph May
This book is an insight and education beyond measure. Matthias C. Hühne can only be an inspiring author since he is an art connoisseur as well as professional developer—both characteristics requiring deep knowledge combined with expansive as well as interpretive thinking. Airline Visual Identity: 1945-1975 shows his talent and dedication to an unsung but fundamental force in the airline industry—branding identity. After an insightful and delightfully concise (the words which are needed and no more) preface explaining how today's brand identity strategies differ from yesterday's singularly dimensional advertising campaigns Hühne gets right to it.

His thorough research yields an impressive book not only in size (~12” x ~18”) and heft (~14 pounds) but in detail and unbiased coverage. There is no reaching only for the low fruit here. Airline Visual Identity: 1945-1975 may first appear as if it is firmly in the coffee table section of the local bookstore, and it would enhance anyone's coffee table considering its production values, but it also fits equally well in the same caliber as the Oxford English Dictionary with its unbiased presentation as well as interpretation of this important era of airline development as well as advertising paradigm shift.

Prior to World War II the airline industry flew propeller driven aircraft laden with affluent customers. Hühne wonderfully describes how Juan Trippe (the driving force behind Pan Am) set the mold for the airline industry which still predominates today with uniforms, jet airliners, wide-bodied airliners and opening the customer base to all economic niches. He also interestingly, and kindly, notes how Howard Hughes nearly ruined TWA by moving too slowly to jet airliners. There is so much more and Hühne's encompassing path takes us through these chapters:
Pan Am
TWA
United Airlines
Continental Airlines
American Airlines
Braniff International
Canadian Pacific Airlines
Japan Airlines
Aeroflot
Swissair
Air France
Lufthansa
British Airways
   Maps and Statistics

Each chapter is filled with information about branding identity decisions (e.g., adding a new airliner type to the fleet), artists, visual technology and changing economic perspectives. There are more airlines to be sure but Hühne has selected these representative thirteen of the industry of the times. The last chapter has eye-opening as well as enlightening drawings of the airline routes through the decades not to mention the passenger statistics by airline through time. Airline Visual Identity: 1945-1975 has a fantastic number of artful posters as well as some excellent photos as well as a thorough index.

Callisto Publishers (based in Berlin Germany) is a well known and leading publishing house for the arts and has matched Hühne's passion and dedication with production values far beyond the norm of book publishing. Colors are spot-on accurate (some images require more than one printing), several varnishes and not one but two foil printing techniques. The price of the book is in keeping with these production values, as well as the work of Hühne. Airline Visual Identity: 1945-1975 is a powerful and standard setting book which belongs in commercial art, commercial photography, marketing curricula as well as college libraries — as well as an historian's personal library since the advertising paradigm shift so closely parallels the evolution of the jet age in the airline industry and as Hühne eloquently shows their paths are as closely intertwined as the twigs of a bird nest.

Callisto Publishers loaned a digital file of this book as an opportunity for an objective review.

A visually superb history of some of the great airlines through their respective posters and advertising
By Rointon G Nugara
A visually superb history of some of the great airlines through their respective posters and advertising. It also harkens back to an era when air travel was stylish and aspirational, and far less of a commoditised service as it is today. Hopefully there'll be a second book covering other great airlines such as Qantas, KLM, Singapore Airlines, SAS, etc.

Gorgeous and Informative
By Jam-i
Stunning graphic history of airline advertising art, livery and identity. Spectacular images and fascinating narrative of the history/development of major US and foreign airlines during the heyday of art/illustration. Big book well worth the price and deserving of the praise heaped on it by others.

From the Author
The hundreds of letters, emails, and comments I've received on this book show that it transcends categories of age, educational level, and gender. Readers range from 15-year-old schoolgirls to college professors, housewives, wage-earners, professionals, and octogenarians. Some have read it simply for the story (saying it kept them up nights to the last page), others discovered hidden levels of meaning and allegory, and still others found it gave them a new sense of absolutes--the true meaning of masculinity and femininity, and the ideals beneath the surface of a fallen world. The book is modeled after the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and William Morris. Watch for the sequel, The Devil's Mouth, due in June 2001

About the Author
Thomas Williams' thirteen books include fiction, theology, drama, and three books on C.S. Lewis's Narnia. He has written one national bestseller and one Gold Medallion Award finalist, In Search of Certainty, co-authored with Josh McDowell. A career designer/illustrator and C.S. Lewis aficionado, Tom's painting of Lewis hangs in the Wade Collection of Lewis manuscripts and memorabilia at Wheaton College. Tom and his wife, Faye, have three married daughters and eight grandchildren.

Too many problems...
By rmhcolo
The plot of this story is really very interesting and it could have made a great book but for a few things. The first is that instead of being a Christian allegory or making points in either a subtle or realistic way, the author makes them by having the main characters repeat them over and over. Many conversations between characters basically consist of 2 people exchanging sermon points. The second is that he repeatedly-when describing the "most" beautiful women in the books makes various references to their ample bosoms. At one point he goes so far as to have the princess wish that she had been born "ugly, flat, and angular". He also makes numerous comments about people that are ugly or unattractive being able to still find someone who will love them or still being able to be happy. So...despite 1/2 the book being a sermon the author has still clearly not grasped the truth that every single one of us is a beautiful and wonderful creation of God. Lastly, there is a scene in which a promiscuous character plans to bathe where one of the main characters will see her in hopes that he will be overcome with desire, have sex with her, and then have to marry her. Instead, one of the bad guys sees her and rapes her. It is stated more than once that this is her fault for being naked in front of him. While what she did was obviously wrong it does not- EVER - make rape OK. I read this book in my constant search to find good books for my tweens to read, but no book that blames a woman for her own rape is ever going to make the cut.

It's not just a story, it's an experience!
By Sam McCormick
Tom Williams has a marvelous way of telling a story. You will actually fall in love with the main characters--and right along with them--feel their hurts, fears, disappointments, as well as their ultimate joy and exhilaration. There are profound lessons woven into the story, but they emerge from the characters' wrestling with decisions and their actions rather than tedious, preachy dialogs and monologs. Williams addresses some knotty theological questions, such as how the free will of men and women fits into an unfailing providence revealed in prophecy. But not to the detriment of a beautiful love story.

This book is masterpiece. It comes in second to none, including the works of George MacDonald, J. R. R. Tolkein, and C. S. Lewis.
